My Response to the Furidashi MGS3 Episode
I’m going to keep this brief because my last post was way too long.
I just finished listening to the MGS3 episode of the Furidashi Podcast, and overall, I think they got it right. Their takes were pretty good, in particular the points on FPV in cutscenes, EVA and the Boss as characters, and the centrality of lore to this entry. I basically agreed with all of those points.
If I had to mention one point I didn’t agree with, it would’ve been the line: “50% of the cuscenes could have been cut out.” That’s like saying “I wish Mario games had 50% less jumping.” These games have been movie-game hybrids since Twin Snakes, it’s part of the appeal.
I guess I should also mention that I am a super fan of Metal Gear Solid 3. It’s on my gaming Mount Rushmore. I’ve beaten various versions of it at least eight times, earned most of the unlockable camos and weapons, and spent over a decade thinking about it.
So if I had to sum up my feelings on this Furidashi episode, I must confess I wanted more analysis. I wanted to hear their take on the fake death pill mechanic; the stamina, injury and food systems; and the new outdoor environmental design patterns. This game packs in a ton of content, especially with the minigames and easter eggs.
To be fair though, they’ve only got a one-hour podcast to work with. Perhaps they discussed more of that stuff in their patreon episode.
Still, I thank them for the shout-out and I’m looking forward to the next one.
